Information and Civic Education Minister Patricia Kaliati warned on Tuesday that the government through its regulatory body, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra), would revoke licenses of mobile phone operators and radio stations that provide poor services.

Kaliati issued the warning when she visited Macra offices in Blantyre as part of her familiarization tour of institutions under her ministry.
She warned that government would take away their the licences and give them to other companies willing to invest in good service delivery
Kaliati warned some private broadcasters in the country to adhere to their license obligations and provisions as provided for in the Communications Act, hinting there was failure by others.
She had the opportunity to appreciate the works of the Spectrum Monitoring Van which helps enforce compliance with radio traffic regulations, as breaches can be recognized in time by means of radio surveillance and radio monitoring.
Kaliati also toured the organisation's Broadcasting Unit as well as the Consolidated ICT Regulatory Management System (CIRMS) which is christened as ‘Spy machine’ - yet to roll out its operations due to a restraining order from the court.
The CIRMS machine aims at improving regulatory monitoring functions which are quality service, revenue assurance, fraud management and spectrum allocation and management.
“This machine is very important because once it starts its operations, customers will enjoy what they are paying for without any interference as we will be able to detect their profits against their service delivery,” said Kaliati.
She added; “And let me warn service providers both radio stations and mobile phone operators not to give their customers a blind eye, taking advantage of their low literacy levels because we will revoke their licenses and give to those who are willing to comply, especially in reaching the rural masses.
Macra Director General, Godfrey Itaye said the organization was waiting for a court ruling from the Supreme Court for the machine to start its operations.—
