A quantity surveyor Luke Mkandawire has donated maize to the needy elderly women in Lilongwe's Kaliyeka township following the food scarcity that has hit the country.

According to Mkandawire who was raised in the same area, he decided to donate the maize following the hardship that elderly women are going through to access maize which is being sold at high prices within the city.
"I know the importance of having food in a house mainly for elderly who most if times are hit hard when it comes to sourcing maize because they are the people who cannot do piece works and mostly end up in begging.
"After growing up in this area, I look up at them as people who were there to perfect my future as they were mostly very close to my parents and grandmother and it is my intention to pay back for all that they did for me to be where I am," he said.
Malawians are finding it hard to live as Admarc markets, which sell maize at K5500 are perpetually closed because of lack of maize whilst vendors are selling the staple food at K9000 beyond the reach of most Malawians facing harsh economic conditions.
Nellie Nyangw’a of Oxfarm recently said her organisation was concerned with the
skyrocketing of maize prices in Malawi which she said was at 40 percent about normal
selling price and would reach above 75 percent above normal selling price by next
week which she said was above reach by many Malawians financially struggling in worsening economic conditions.
Government officials concede selling of maize in Admarc depots is marred by corruption as someone Admarc officials connive with vendors to buy the maize in bulks in order to resale at exorbitant prices beyond the reach of ordinary people.
