Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL), Malawi's major fuel importer, has donated K3 million to Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi chapter as its contribution towards this year’s annual World Press Freedom day.

Speaking during the donation PIL General Manager Enwell Kadango said the company acknowledges the important role being played by the Journalists in the country and world over in keeping all humanity in check of its governance.
“PIL applauds the media fraternity in all their endeavors to disseminate information to the public and bring out issues of concern for correction action and or general awareness, As such, the press needs to have the freedom to accomplish this mammoth task,” said Kadango.
Kadango said PIL believes that donation will help MISA Malawi chapter meet some of their obligations as they plan for their annual press freedom day for 2016.
‘The country can only develop if we have the right information on which to base our decisions on and also for others to do what they are meant to do for the common good of everyone” he noted.
In his remarks MISA- Malawi Chairperson Thom Khanje thanked PIL for being the first company to respond to their request for assistance.
“ I would like to thank PIL for this generous and timely donation which will go a long way not only in ensuring the success of the World Freedom Day commemorations this year but will also likely spur other partners to support us as well,” said Khanje.
Khanje said this year’s budget for the commemoration which is expected to take place at Nkopola lodge in Mangochi on May 7 is pegged at K30 million.
The K3 million from PIL will cater for the Media house of the year awards which have this year been extended to print media, radio, television and online, life time achiever as well as transportation costs for members.
Starting from 2017, PIL will be supporting training and an award on Safety and Security during World Press Freedom Day.
