Malawi’s leading mobile network company, Airtel Malawi on Wednesday donated materials used for cervical cancer screening to Cancer Survivors Quest.

The materials include Vinegar and cotton wool, and in addition to this methylated spirit, disposable aprons and medical gloves.
Handing over the equipment in Blantyre, Airtel Malawi Enterprise Director Rachel Mijiga said that the company believes that with this support, and that of other partners in this fight, cervical cancer screening shall be ably facilitated in the quest to reach out to women far and wide in Malawi.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that Malawi becomes a champion in fighting against cervical cancer. Our country’s success story in screening, diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer should be an instrumental model for the continent of Africa and indeed the entire world,” said Mijiga.
She therefore, urged other stakeholders, and more especially all women aged between 15 and 49 years, to make it habit to have themselves screened for cervical cancer on annual continuous basis.
Mijiga said as a country, we need to uphold a comprehensive sustainable plan that puts cancer on the priority areas of national concern so that various responses are scaled up in a coordinated and innovative way.
“Apart from the cancer survivors Quest Organisation, relevant stakeholders must be proactive in mass education and awareness campaigns to promote cervical cancer prevention,” she said.
She also said the fight against cervical cancer in Malawi will, of course, take more than vaccines and vinegar.
In his remarks, Cancer Survivor’s Quest founder Chikhulupiliro Ng’ombe thanked Airtel Malawi for the timely donation saying it will assist a number of women in the country in as far as screening cancer is concerned.
He said the equipment can be used to screen 10,000 women.
“We are really greatful to Airtel for this assistance which will go a long way in screening cancer to women. Our plea to other companies to emulate Airtel’s example because we still need more support,” he said.
