Minister of Information, Tourism and Civic Education, Patricia Kaliati has applauded the Malawi Posts Corporation (MPC) for efficiently delivering its services despite several challenges the company encounters. This just shows that they are indeed working together with government to achieve the core vision of the corporation. “The establishment of One Stop Service Centre is another milestone as it will make sure that people find all important services in MPCs offices,” said Kaliati. The Minister indicated they will incorporate a lot of service from various ministries at the One Stop Centre Service so that people should be able to access them in their respective post offices. “MPC has 182 post offices but only 50 are making profits but if the one stop centres are put across in all of these, we will be able to make them functional again. “We would want various ministries and stakeholders to come forward and use the centres in reaching out to people. We want to incorporate programmes like cash transfer, MASAF 4 where beneficiaries will be able to receive payments at the post offices,” said Kaliati. In his remarks, Board Chair for MPC, Reverend Masauko Mbolembole appreciated the minister’s visit to see for herself the progress and status of the corporation which has been there for a long time. He said the company will continue doing all it can to be competitive and profitable. The minister also visited the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) to develop a partnership with the Ministry of Information’s MPC and MBC to educate people about tax since most of them are not conversant with taxation issues. She said it is high time Malawians had wider knowledge on tax issues so that they make informed decisions. “We would like MRA to use us to help them in putting across tax education because people think that once they have paid tax it’s done only to realize later that they missed something. “Thus, the same MRA can also use MPC whenever they have things to deliver somewhere thereby helping to boost their business,” said Kaliati. MRA Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma commended the minister for the partnership and cooperation approach saying it will help in educating people about taxes and how they can develop Malawi. Apart from MPC and MRA, the minister also toured NACIT and TNM to appreciate what they are doing and brainstorm on ideas about good service delivery.

MSB sale was another form of cashgate

Over 400 retrenched staff of FDH and Malawi Savings Bank (MSB) have entered a third day of vigil at the office of the financial institution’s chief executive officer Thom Mpinganjira in a bid to force him pay them their pension and severance pay. [caption id="attachment_108209" align="alignright" width="600"]Thom Mpinganjira: Fired workers protest at his office Thom Mpinganjira: Fired workers protest at his office[/caption] [caption id="attachment_108208" align="alignright" width="600"]MSB sale was another form of cashgate MSB sale was another form of cashgate[/caption] Spokesperson for the retrenched employees Chifundo Soko said the vigil, staged in Blantyre, will only be called off after the banks honour payments of their dues. “It is now close to a month since we were retrenched yet management is reluctant to give us our dues. “We have been asking them to pay us but the answer has always been give us time, the vigil is the last resort,” said Soko. Financial tycoon Mpinganjira controversially bought MSB which was 100 per cent state owned and merged it with his FDH Bank last year, raising fears of imminent retrenchment but both the government and FDH Bank officials assured the nation on one would lose a job at the banks. However after the retrenchment, minister of Labour Henry Mussa said the government approved the retrenchments saying there were duplicating positions in the two banks following the merger and as a private entity, they had to maximize on profits. However chairman of community and social welfare committee of parliament  Richard Chimwendo Banda said the committee has summoned Labour ministry officials to explain why it allowed the retrenchment to take place after assurances by Finance minister Goodall Gondwe that o one would lose a job. Officials from FDH Holdings including Mpinganjira could not be reached for comment.

An International Islamic Relief Organisation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (IIROSA) has donated MK210 million worth of relief food items to be distributed to households in districts affected by drought like Salima, Blanytre and Mangochi among others. [caption id="attachment_108237" align="alignright" width="367"]Sheikh Walid El Saadi distributing maize Sheikh Walid El Saadi distributing maize[/caption] [caption id="attachment_108238" align="alignright" width="450"]Sheikh Walid El Saadi distributing relief food items to the drought victims at Lunzu - pic by Brian Wasili Sheikh Walid El Saadi distributing relief food items to the drought victims at Lunzu - pic by Brian Wasili[/caption] The donation comes after President Peter Mutharika made a call for relief food items towards people affected by the drought which hit most parts of the country resulting to poor harvest in the 2015/2016 growing season. In an interview with the Malawi News Agency (Mana) after the distribution of the items at Lunzu in Senior Chief Kapeni’s area in Blanytre on Thursday, Southern Africa Regional Officer for the organisation, Sheikh Walid El Saadi said his organisation decided to come up with the donation to Malawi in response to the government’s call for food assistance to the people affected by the drought. “This is a response to the government’s call to help people who did not harvest enough due to drought which affected most parts of the country this year. “As Moslems, we believe in sharing with the poor affected by the global change in Africa including Malawi regardless of religion, tribe, race, skin colour or political background,” explained Saadi. He said last year his organisation came up with similar assistance to the people whose crops were swept away by floods. Speaking on behalf of the District Commissioner, Charles Mphepo who is also the Disaster Desk Officer for the district commended the organisation for including Blantyre among the districts to benefit from the donation. He said more food assistance is still needed for the drought victims in the district. He therefore called upon other well wishers to come forward with relief items in form of food. Mphepo also advised the beneficiaries to put the relief items to proper use. One of the beneficiaries Fatima Iddi  hailed the organisation for the assistance saying it will help her household as she didn’t harvest enough this year due to the drought. 1,000 households received 20 kilograms of maize flour and 5 kilograms of beans each.

MBS boss Chokazinga warns against uncertitifed cooking oil

Malawi Police in the tea growing district of Mulanje on Thursday intercepted gallons of cooking oil smuggled from Mozambique, and have since arrested two smugglers in the process. Two people, identified as Chifundo Chithyoka and Khisi plying their business at Chikuse Trading Centre, Mulanje have been arrested and charged of smuggling items into the country. “The officers on night patrols as the ones who, in course of duties, met the minibus using an unchartered route, which prompted them to stop and search it,” explained Mulanje police Public Relations Officer, Gresham Ngwira. Ngwira said the two had no official Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) documents, allowing them to import the cooking oil into the country. “The minibus was impounded and currently the cooking oil has been handed over to MRA at Muloza boarder”. [caption id="attachment_108253" align="alignright" width="275"]The cooking oil confiscated by police The cooking oil confiscated by police[/caption] Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) Chief Executive Officer Davlin Chokazinga has since  issued a stern warning to people who are involved in smuggling and selling of unrefined and uncertified cooking oil in local markets across the country. He said MBS will comprehensively engage its inspectors to go to different markets in all districts in the country and confiscate all the uncertified cooking oil. Chokazinga said cooking oil of such nature is dangerous to human health and they create health pressure not only on the people using them but the country’s health system. “That is why we insist that people, whatever the case, need to buy oil that is approved by MBS as oil that is well refined and certified as suitable for human consumption,” he said. In a related development, MBS has with immediate effect suspended operations of Krazy Foods situated at Ginnery Corner and People's Blantyre Metro Shop catering and bakery services due to continuous non compliance to hygienic conditions. The two institutions have been failing to abide by the Malawi Standard Number 21; Food and Food Processing Units –Code of Hygienic Conditions. Meanwhile the bureau MBS has advised the general public against patronizing these two places until the hygienic conditions have been improved and the suspension lifted.

Minister of Information, Communications, Technology and Civic Education, Patricia Kaliati, has asked officials from Department of Civic Education to intensify awareness on digital migration ahead of the switch off from analogue to digital broadcasting in Mzuzu and its surrounding areas. Speaking Saturday at Mzuzu Upper Stadium during the launch of the Malawi Digital Television and digital decoders branded ‘Kiliye Kiliye’ Decoders, Kaliati said people need to be aware that come 1st July, 2016, they will not be able to watch television without the digital decoder as all analogue transmission equipment will be switched off. “Let me ask officials to intensify awareness messages to the public so that they understand, embrace and adopt the change because come 1st July, we are going digital,” she said. During the launch, which was spiced by live performance of the Kiliye Kiliye Digital theme song by Lucius Banda, Malawi National Dance Troupe and Young Africans, Kaliati announced the reduced price of the digital decoder from K15, 000 to K13, 500 to enable more Malawians purchase the decoder. “We need to be an ICT and digital driven nation and everyone else must migrate. This is the reason government has subsidized the price to enable all Malawians afford the decoder,” she said. She said from July 1 this year, government will work with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) to make sure that all decoders that are not digital should not be found on the market or be imported into the country. She, therefore, asked broadcasters who are on digital broadcasting to incorporate a cultural perspective as the president is championing the Buy- Malawian Campaign, In her remarks, Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) Board Chairperson, Mervis Mangulenje, said Malawi viewers will benefit a lot from digital broadcasting as it promotes local development content. Mangulenje said it is MACRA’s expectation that the broadcasters will make a deliberate attempt to adhere to their licenses provision where they will have to air 60 percent local content and 40 per cent foreign. She therefore assured that MACRA shall continue to regulate the broadcasting services in accordance with the digital legal and regulatory framework. Malawi is among the five countries that have been recognized by International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to have migrated in the SADC countries joining Mauritius, Tanzania, Namibia and Mozambique. The development is as a result of the resolution of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for SADC member countries to migrate to digital television broadcasting by 17th June 2015. Malawi will be switching off in phases and Mzuzu will be the first to migrate from analogue to digital broadcasting. Digital Migration Coordinator in the Ministry of Information, Communications, Technology and Civic Education, Gedion Munthali, said Mzuzu was found appropriate to be the first to migrate following a random survey which revealed that Mzuzu had fulfilled the three main variables that must be considered before the switch off. The three variables are that there is a reliable digital signal, has a good uptake of decoders and that there was a fairly good level of awareness about digital migration. The Malawi Digital Bouquet has 18 television channels that include Times, ABC, Luso, Luntha, Angaliba, Ufulu, Beta and tax-payers run Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) among others.

Tobacco Auction Floor - Kanengo

Tobacco selling on Monday started on a good note at Kanengo Auction Floors in Lilongwe following a week of poor prices, high rejection rate and violence as tobacco farmers on Thursday literally chased away buyers from the market. [caption id="attachment_108400" align="alignright" width="600"]Tobacco auctioning in progress at Kaneno Auction Floors Tobacco auctioning in progress at Kaneno Auction Floors[/caption] [caption id="attachment_108401" align="alignright" width="600"]Tobacco Auction Floor - Kanengo Tobacco Auction Floor - Kanengo[/caption] Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) chief executive officer Albert Changaya said prices ranged from 80 cents to 140 cents, saying this was much better than last week. He also said the rejection rate was hovering around 73 per cent down from 80 per cent last week. “There is improvement this week, we hope this will hold,” he said, adding the contract leaf was fetching as high as US$2. “This is encouraging. Buyers have also increased volumes of tobacco tey are buying. There is hope of improvement,” he said. Last week the tobacco market at Kanengo was suspended twice after farmers run amok, chasing buyers out of the market, threatening to beat them up for the low tobacco prices However, contract tobacco farmers blamed their auction tobacco counterparts for deliberately causing the violence to disturb the market out of sheer jealousy because the contract tobacco was fetching higher prices because it s of high quality. Tobacco Control Commission officials brokered peace between the buyers and farmers that has led to the opening of the market o Monday.

The MoU  lays out a framework for collaboration between Standard Bank Malawi and the Global Fund over the next three years. The Global Fund mobilizes and invests US$4 billion a year to combat the AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria epidemics. It supports programs run by local experts in countries and communities most in need. More than 50% of that funding is directed to countries in Africa, with US$850 million invested in Malawian programmes since 2002. The MoU between Standard Bank Malawi and the Global Fund focuses on improving the financial skills and management expertise of Global Fund implementers, allowing them to strengthen management of Global Fund resources and improve reporting requirements. Chokohto:

Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has expressed concern over company closures and has since urged the government to put in place sound economic policies to avert the situation. [caption id="attachment_108500" align="alignright" width="357"]Chokohto: Chokohto: Concern[/caption] [caption id="attachment_108501" align="alignright" width="600"]Mwanamvekha: Mwanamvekha: Need to change mindset[/caption] MCCI president Karl Chokotho said this in Blantyre when Trade minister Joseph Mwanamveka met some business people and officials from the chamber. “It is sad that companies continue to down size their operations, whilst others are closing down completely,” he said. He said the government needs to come up with sound economic policies to save the situation saying inflation and interest rates remain extremely high posing a great threat to industrialization and manufacturing. MCCI hailed the ‘Best Buy Malawian’ Initiative as a welcome development urged the government to come up with policies on this. Chokotho said the initiative can be senseless if Malawians continue to produce low quality products. Industry and Trade minister Mwanamveka said there was need to change mindset, saying he was of the view Malawians have potential to produce quality products that can compete favourably on the international market.

Social commentator Michael Usi has called for a revolution in the way Malawians, including government, respond to disasters—saying relief items sometimes scratch displaced Malawians where it does not really itch. [caption id="attachment_108505" align="alignright" width="600"]Usi giving cash to a woman with disability. Pic by Pius Nyondo, Nyasa Times Usi giving cash to a woman with disability. Pic by Pius Nyondo, Nyasa Times[/caption] [caption id="attachment_108504" align="alignright" width="600"]Deputy Mayor Chunga with Usi Deputy Mayor Chunga with Usi[/caption] The deputy country director of Adventist Development and Relief Agency (Adra) called for a mind-set change when the organisation donated cash amounting to K1 million to 200 survivors of torrential rains that killed six people and displaced about 2 000 households in Mzuzu on Tuesday. Asked why Adra had opted for cash hand-outs, Usi said: “I thank government for the timely response when disaster struck the northern part of the country. A lot of people have come in to donate foodstuffs, blankets, clothes and other relief items, but are these goods really addressing the needs of those affected? “I want to request the well-wishers to consider making part of the donations because it will enable the suffering Malawians to meet some of their neglected needs that no-one can see in the absence of a thorough needs assessment.” Adra has urged Mzuzu City council to quickly assess the needs of the survivors affected by the floods and landslides caused by the rains, which battered the city for almost three weeks, for the national and private response to address the real needs of the displaced community. About 500 people are still scattered in camps that emerged across the city when the rains wreaked havoc. Deputy Mayor Frazer Chunga thanked Adra for spearheading “the revolution”, saying the cash envelops will help the worst hit to buy silent needs that have not been forthcoming as donations trickle in from both the public and private sectors. “We thank all Malawians of goodwill for coming to the rescue of the affected population when the disasters befell us. However, I would like to request them to consider emulating Adra’s example because giving them cash will help households prioritise their need and buy the basics they really lack,” said Chunga in an interview at Mzuzu Stadium. The sports arena was inundated by desperate Malawians grappling with a sense of loss as they rise from one of the worst tragedies since Mzuzu was declared a city almost 20 years ago. About 60 people were chucked off the queue for gate-crashing into the stadium, but they were served last. The beneficiaries largely comprised widows, the elderly, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. Before making the donation, Adra donated K1 million to the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia, marking the start of a partnership to ensure orphans, widows and people living with HIV have access to antiretroviral drugs, education materials, nutritious food and other necessities. Speaking when she presented the cheque, Adra district manager Susan Chitaya said: “We have confidence in the good job the synod is doing to change lives of Malawians. We often meet during meetings and in civil society networks. We decided to enter into this partnership to strengthen our ties as we strive to uplift people affected by the pandemic.” Synod treasurer Gerald Kamanga, who received the cheque in the presence of Church and Society executive director Moses Mkandawire thanked Adra for the funding. Kamanga received the cheque on behalf of the Reverend Levi Nyondo who was in South Africa to strengthen an emerging in the ‘Rainbow Nation’.

Government has taken over the importation of fuel through the National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma), a move that has been condemned by a fuel cartel. This will change. We will bring in new players in the industry,” said Kalowekamo. He said parliament will change legislation in May so that National Oil Company is mandated to import fuel apart from its current core of storing the commodity. PIL includes fuel retailers; Puma, Total, Injena and Petroda. Kalowekamo said the 2003 energy policy will also be changed to reflect the new role of the state run National Oil company. “The National Oil Company will be one of the major importers of fuel in the country,” he said. The government says the coming in of the National Oil Company, headed by fuel experienced guru Robert Mdeza, will deal with fuel shortages experienced in the past few years.

Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Civic Education, Patricia Kaliati has described the introduction of one stop service centre as Government's demonstration to deliver quality public services. Pic Arnold Namanja (MANA) The interior of the refurbished Mangochi Post Office which will soon turn into a One Stop Service Centre. Pic Arnold Namanja (MANA)[/caption] Kaliati said once complete the one stop service centre would consolidate government's public service reforms in providing different essential services to Malawians under one roof. “The one stop centre concept is one of the projects under the public service reform programme, it is a direct response to calls from ordinary Malawians to have good quality services in public institutions,” Kaliati added. Kaliati was speaking on Tuesday after inspecting refurbishment of Mangochi Post Office which will soon evolve into a one stop centre. Some of the services to be obtained at the centre will include those of Department of Immigration, Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services, Malawi Revenue Authority and Deceased Estates management by the Administrator General among others. The minister said the facility would also enhance small and medium enterprises thereby encouraging local communities to support government in its socio - economic drive. Kaliati said the one stop service centre would also cater for other social protection programmes being administered at the district council such as the social cash transfer scheme, public works programme and chiefs wages. “I am optimistic that the centre once in full swing, would bring together such services like paying out of chiefs honoraria, social cash transfers and public works programme as a part of strengthening the decentralization process. “My coming, therefore, was basically to jog the officials into engaging an extra gear to complete the renovations on time so that people no longer travel long distances to Lilongwe or Blantyre to get the services such as those that will be provided at this centre,” she added. On the other hand, Kaliati said the centre would also act as a hub for the general public to access internet from the tele - centre. She said the facility would also be utilized as a place for marketing the district's tourist resorts thereby contributing to the council's revenue base. “Over and above, different categories of people will utilize vital information from the internet on various subjects ranging from agriculture, education and health,” she emphasized. She, therefore, called on people in the district and the country as a whole to embrace the three basic principles of development as espoused by the country's leadership of patriotism, hard work and integrity to develop the nation. Malawi Postal Services (MPC) Board Chairperson, Rev. Masauko Mbolembole said government has fully supported the drive to have one stop service centres as a pilot to enhance delivery of services in line with the public service reform agenda. Mbolembole said MPC would remain committed to serving people in the country with due diligence as one way of fulfilling government plan of developing the country socio-economically. “Apart from changing the face of the post office it will also add beauty to the face of Mangochi Town which is fast becoming a tourist attraction owing to its lakeshore status,” Mbolembole said. According to MPC Post Master General, Andrew Kumbatira the facility was an attempt to be in line with worldwide trends where government integrates essential public service so that people get such services at one place. He said the centres which use technology to bring different services at one place were modeled in South Africa and other countries in the SADC region. “For a start we are starting with Mangochi and Lilongwe as a pilot. We expect that the facilities will reduce travelling costs for the general public in pursuit of accessing the services,” Kumbatira said. “This is historic as it will serve people of Mangochi and surrounding districts.” The facility is expected to be in operation by June 30 this year as the country also migrates access to TV signal from analogue to digital.

Chaponda:

Surprises characterized the opening of the Mzuzu Auction Floors on Wednesday as the leaf fetched a historic high US$1.60 and the rejection rate was much lower than in other tobacco markets. [caption id="attachment_108562" align="alignright" width="600"]Chaponda: Chaponda: Improved prices[/caption] [caption id="attachment_108561" align="alignright" width="600"]Good start at Mzuzu tobacco auction floors Good start at Mzuzu tobacco auction floors[/caption] Opening the market, Agriculture minister George Chaponda hailed the tobacco buyers for heeding to his call for improved tobacco prices. “This is good, and this is what we have been telling them to do. Our farmers have to enjoy their sweat,” he said after opening the market. Most farmers said they were happy with the tobacco prices and hoped the buyers would continue offering the good prices. Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) chief executive officer Albert Changaya said the leaf on the auction was of high quality. “The rejection rate was low because the leaf was of high quality. This is good news for us and for the farmers,” he said. Protests and violence have marred the tobacco market at Kanengo in Lilongwe as farmers protested low tobacco prices and high rejection rate.

Speaking at the event, Malawi’s World Bank Country Manager Laura Kullenberg said over the years the reports have become highly influential publications that are used by many multilateral and bilateral international organisations, national governments, scholars, civil society networks among others to support their decision making processes. Kullenberg then disclosed that the 2016 report is focusing on Digital Dividends, saying the world is in the middle of the greatest information and communications revolution in human history. “More than 40 percent of the world’s population now has access to the internet. This rapid technological change has brought many benefits to the poor and disadvantaged,” she noted. She added that the World Bank’s World Development Report 2016 Digital Dividends documents examples where the internet, mobile phones and related technologies have promoted inclusion, efficiency and innovation. “In many instances, this has allowed businesses to get more productive, people find new opportunities and government improve their operations. The payoff; faster growth, more jobs and better services, that’s why the report is referred to as Digital Dividends,” Kullenberg explained. The country Manager further stressed that The World Bank Group has a strong portfolio in supporting the digital development agenda which includes ICT infrastructure investments in fragile or remote countries where the private sector is unable to do the job. She said: “Here in Malawi, we have been working for a number of years with Government to use digital technologies as a way to raise productivity, to promote competitiveness and diversify the economy. High quality, low cost broadband is a foundation stone for competitiveness in other sectors, especially financial services.” However, speaking in a separate interview after the WDR launch, Mzimba North MP Hon. Agnes Makonda NyaLonje who is also Deputy Chairperson for Parliament’s Education, Science and Technology Committee said there is a need to address connectivity problems in rural areas if Malawi is to yield maximum benefits from ICT. “If you look at the Malawian setting, the majority are in rural areas where there is no or slow connectivity. Most young people are also living in rural areas and they can’t operate E-Businesses unless they have connectivity and they have the technical know-how,” she emphasized.

We are a patriotic brand that is proud of our heritage as a home-grown telecoms business. We are confident of the long-term potential that Malawi offers to her warm-hearted people. Our role as TNM is to apply mobile telecoms in everyday life and lead in unleashing the potential that lies beneath,” he said. Since 2011, the mobile telecoms sector has been contributing significantly to Malawi’s economic growth, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Analysts such as the Standard Bank Group have tipped mobile telecoms to continue contributing to growth in Africa, albeit at a slower pace due to factors surrounding commodity prices like oil. The thematic campaign encourages Malawians to “Share, Cheer, Serve, Dance and Innovate”. It was developed for TNM by FD Communications Ltd, a leading Malawian advertising and public relations agency. Makata said these attributes will help inspire Malawians to contribute great things to their great country and rise above perennial challenges. “We must work towards turning challenges into opportunity. There’s new optimism for a better Malawi, and with the mobile technology that TNM offers, the time is ripe to achieve great things in a great country,” he said. The CEO said in coming up with the thematic campaign TNM a engaged customers to understand their passion points and needs so as to deliver relevant communication. "After about 20 years in the market, our customers are more mature and we need to ensure we grow together with them. Our refreshed brand communication tools acknowledge the importance of celebrating with Malawians while recognizing the value our customers," said Makata. Stevenson said the mobile provider will continue to offer a great range of mobile benefits to its customers with a local touch and feel while connecting them to endless opportunities locally and internationally. “TNM is an enabler of business and personal life. Our integration of mobile telecoms and ISP business following the Burco acquisition gives us the leverage to unlock the potential of mobile data as a catalyst and gateway to prosperity,” he said. He added; “With our new shift in business strategy, strengthened connection to the family and business networks, we're excited to give our customers a true Malawian experience and feel as well as so much more value. TNM is committed to provide simplified and converged products and services to Malawians. As a local company, TNM is very passionate in bringing innovative services and products to its customers as such we will make sure that we offer tailor made mobile services,” he said. As part of the campaign, TNM has launched a high-tech retail sales centre at the new Gateway Mall in Lilongwe. The company has also increased the number of its shops to 24 from 16. All the shops have been rebranded with the new thematic campaign. TNM, listed on the Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE) continues to enjoy healthy profits, posting a net profit after tax of K5.4 billion, up from K5.4 billion, of which over K3 billion has been proposed to be paid as dividends for the company’s shareholders.

A statement from ARASA says MANERELA+ was presented the award at the end of the Alliance's Annual Partnership Forum on Thursday evening for the organisation's inclusive approach in dealing with stigma and discrimination. “The vast majority of Malawians prescribe to some religion, and lesbian, gay, transgender or intersex (LGBTI) people are often regarded as being cursed or satanic by communities,” notes the statement. “MANERELA+ is the only faith based organization in Malawi that is advocating for the human rights of LGBTI groups, including repealing of discriminatory laws, in very challenging circumstances.” MANERELA+, is a Malawian interfaith and voluntary membership network of religious leaders living with or personally affected by HIV and AIDS. The organization works to reduce stigma, silence, denial, discrimination, inaction, and mis-action through the promotion and involvement of the faith community. According to ARASA's Director, Michaela Clayton, who is quoted in the statement, the award was established in 2007 to recognize and support organizations across southern and eastern Africa to highlight the ground-breaking work undertaken by the organizations to protect human rights, often in extremely challenging political climates. The statement quotes MANELERA+ Vice Chairperson, Pastor Anderson Mataka, to have said: “This award will help religious leaders recognize their potential of being role models to advocate for all people living with HIV to be accepted in our communities, including people of all sexual orientations.” MANERELA+ has also facilitated the establishment of church and mosque-based HIV support groups in 20 districts of Malawi, supporting them with trainings and referral linkages. The faith-based organization has also established peer pressure groups and advocacy committees in the districts to advocate for TB and HIV services to be made accessible to all. The ARASA annual event provides an opportunity for the ARASA's 106 partners to review the status of HIV, TB and human Rights in the region, and identify emerging human rights challenges for targeted responses in the next year.

Presiding over the launch was Director of Prosecutions in the Malawi Police Service (MPS) Deputy Commissioner of Police Happy Mkandawire, who expressed gratitude to LSPCA for complementing the service’s efforts in enforcing the animal protection legislation. “Before the coming of LSPCA, we had been facing a lot of problems in enforcing the animal protection law. "It was difficult for us to make people understand that animals too had their rights as enshrined in the Animal Protection Act but with the coming of the organisation, our job has been made easy because LSPCA is able to reach out to the public with awareness programmes on animal protection,” said Mkandawire. LSPCA board chair Eveline Sibindi Van Dam expressed optimism that more members from the community will be able to reach the organisation in the new premises. “We were operating from a small office in Area 9 but the new premises offer a good environment for our clients, partners, staff as well as the education programmes that we provide to the public,” said Sibindi. The board chair hailed the Malawi Police Service, Lilongwe City Council, Veterinary Department and international partners for working hand in hand with the organisation in safeguarding animal welfare. Apart from running a veterinary clinic for pets and farm animals, LSPCA has been offering the following services for free; education of school children on animal welfare and the importance of correct animal care, veterinary treatment to village farm animals, empowering communities with knowledge on improving welfare of donkeys, organising large scale rabies’ campaigns in conjunction with the government and sterilising village dogs. LSPCA also has healthy dogs and cats of different breeds for adoption at a fee.
