An International Islamic Relief Organisation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (IIROSA) has donated MK210 million worth of relief food items to be distributed to households in districts affected by drought like Salima, Blanytre and Mangochi among others.

The donation comes after President Peter Mutharika made a call for relief food items towards people affected by the drought which hit most parts of the country resulting to poor harvest in the 2015/2016 growing season.
In an interview with the Malawi News Agency (Mana) after the distribution of the items at Lunzu in Senior Chief Kapeni’s area in Blanytre on Thursday, Southern Africa Regional Officer for the organisation, Sheikh Walid El Saadi said his organisation decided to come up with the donation to Malawi in response to the government’s call for food assistance to the people affected by the drought.
“This is a response to the government’s call to help people who did not harvest enough due to drought which affected most parts of the country this year.
“As Moslems, we believe in sharing with the poor affected by the global change in Africa including Malawi regardless of religion, tribe, race, skin colour or political background,” explained Saadi.
He said last year his organisation came up with similar assistance to the people whose crops were swept away by floods.
Speaking on behalf of the District Commissioner, Charles Mphepo who is also the Disaster Desk Officer for the district commended the organisation for including Blantyre among the districts to benefit from the donation. He said more food assistance is still needed for the drought victims in the district.
He therefore called upon other well wishers to come forward with relief items in form of food.
Mphepo also advised the beneficiaries to put the relief items to proper use.
One of the beneficiaries Fatima Iddi hailed the organisation for the assistance saying it will help her household as she didn’t harvest enough this year due to the drought.
1,000 households received 20 kilograms of maize flour and 5 kilograms of beans each.
