Chibuku beer suspended following hygiene concerns – Malawi Bureau of Standards

Brewers of Malawi’s popular opaque beer, Chibuku Products Limited (CPL), has been suspended  from production and distribution of Chibuku Shake-Shake beer for non compliance with hygienie standards, according to Malawi Bureau of Standards. [caption id="attachment_104759" align="alignright" width="600"] Chibuku[/caption] [caption id="attachment_104758" align="alignright" width="596"] Chibuku Shake-Shake, local brew[/caption] The bureau on Tuesday sealed Chibuku’s  Lilongwe plant and will only be opened until the hygienie concerns are addressed MBS director general Davlin Chokazinga  said: “MBS operates product and service and certification schemes to ensure that goods or services comply with quality requirements.” He said MSB inspection at CPL’s Lilongwe plant found that their products are “unhygienic and not fit for human consumption.” Chokazinga said the development should save as a warning to other traders who are not complying with the MS-21, a code of hygienic conditions for food and food processing. He said the bureau will continue with its periodic inspections to ensure that it cleans all unsafe and unfit products on the market as stipulated by the law. “It is our mandate to protect the consumers and we have the power seal unhygienic places. We are receiving information almost on daily basis of traders who are selling unfit products to the public. “We would therefore like to make it clear that we working tirelessly to ensure that all uncertified and unfit products on the local markets are wiped out from the market,” he said. CPL, a subsidiary of South African’s SABMiller,  is yet  to make a comment. Corporate Affairs Manager Wiseman Chauluka of Chibuku said the company will issue a statement. Apart from Malawi, the country’s popular opaque beer is also brewed and sold by Chibuku sister companies- operating under SABMiller- in Ghana, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.
