Irate villagers around Nkhotakota boma on Wednesday made an impromptu protests to the office of the Admarc depot supervisor against the decision to sell out a bulk of a 300 bag maize consignment to a legislator, police officers and council staff among others leaving out ordinary poor people.

They chanted freedom songs as they marched to the Admarc supervisor's office after they were told that the market had run out of the grain just a day after a consignment of 300 bags were brought in.
On Tuesday, the depot received the maize but management started selling it on Wednesday.
Just a few hours after the selling exercise started, the staff told the people that the depot had run out of the grain to the dismay of the villagers.
This prompted the villagers, mostly women and children to demand explanations from the staff on how the 300 bags could sell out just after less than a 100 people had bought.
It later transpired that Nkhotakota south MP Greselda Geoffrey wa Jeffrey had bought 10 bags of maize, the police, council staff and other civil servants had earlier bought the grain before the market opened, angering the villagers who had to spend hours on queue just to be told the maize had finished.
The member of parliament confirmed having bought the maize but said she distributes to poor people in her constituency.
Police publicist in the district Williams Kaponda said the maize was for food for suspects on remand and also for some police officers.
