In a bid to improve quality of water services in the capital, the Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) has signed a 24 million Euros water expansion project (K16,5 billion) with with European Investment Bank .

The water utility company Director of Finance, Silli Mbewe, disclosed this when he alongside senior officials presided over the launch of Mlodza Water Users Association in area 23.
Mbewe said his organisation is aware about challenges which the Lilongwe residents are facing in as far as accessing the clean water is concern.
"We have so far signed the financing agreement with European Investment Bank totalling to 24 Million Euros. This project is aimed at making sure that there should be no more problems in as far as access to water is concern," said Mbewe.
Mbewe said LWB will use part of the financing agreement to financing extension of water treatment works.
"We are also embarking on Ngwenya, Chikungu and Chitedze resevior project which will help to boost water pressure," said Mbewe.
According to Mbewe, LWB will also use the money for Lumbadzi Ground water project.
Mbewe also announced during the event that LWB will in 2016 role out mobile billing system as well as pre-paid meter system.
In order to improve efficiency, Mbewe said LWB will embark on non revenue waste reduction Initiatives which will ensure that water is not just being lost before reaching the consumers.
"This will be possible by improving geographical information system while on long term we will embark on construction of Diamphwe Dam," said Mbewe.
But Mbewe admitted that the high population which Lilongwe City is registering is giving pressure on the pumping of water since it is increasing the demand.
In his speech, Senior Chief Tsabango representative, Senior Group Village Headman Chiuzira commended LWB for launching the Mlodza Water Users Association.
Chiuzira said women were walking long distances to access water.
The Lilongwe City needs 125,000 Cubic Metres of water but the company only manages to pump, 90,000 Cubic Metres.
