Cost of living in Malawi

Life in Malawi continue to remain unbearable following revelation that for a family to live a comfortable they need K131,207.00 as their monthly income, the Centre For Social Concern(CFSC) a social-research arm of Catholic church says. The report says it is unfortunate that their research have indicated that Malawians salary scales are still low. Speaking during the Basic Needs Basket Conference in Lilongwe, CFSC Executive director Jos Kuppens said the organisation remains committed in giving research based information on how Malawian families can live the dignified lives. CFSC data reveal that nurses and clinicians receives K81,059, Projects officers goes home with K132,516, and that on maximum some goes home with K380,000. According to the data, Malawi journalists goe home with K71,115 as minimum and K154,388 as maximum. While teachers receive K52, 506 and K127, 000 maximum. Bread Basket Needs is aimed at monitoring cost of living in the four cities and other urban areas. The BNB also intends to raise awareness among urban dwellers about their right to decent way of living. According to the CFSC a bag of maize is currently trading at K7,286 in Lilongwe while the same bag is trading at K8,500 in Zomba and K8,400 in Blantyre while the same bag is trading at K6,600 in Mzuzu. The same data indicate that a 3 bedroom house rentals is at K31,969 in Lilongwe while the same house is at K20,960 in Zomba and K28, 292 in Blantyre while people have to pay the same house K13,286 in Mzuzu.
