Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) has contributed K9 million towards the construction of a new maternity wing at Chiosya health centre in central district of Mchinji.

The new facility, once completed, will service a catchment population of over 31,000 people.
Speaking when she presented the contribution, Managing Executive for Operations (Centre), Phyllis Manguluti claimed the contribution is in line with the company’s policy of promoting delivery of quality health services in the country's remote areas.
“TNM is a patriotic Malawian company with the welfare of citizens at heart. With the existing maternity facilities at Chiosya Health Centre condemned as not fit for use and considering the long distance to the district hospital in Mchinji, we saw it necessary to invest K9 million towards the modern maternity wing,” said Manguluti.
The new facility currently under construction will have pre-natal, delivery and post-natal beds and ancillary support rooms for staff adjacent to the existing facility.
She said TNM remains committed to playing its part in helping Government to improve health service delivery in the country.
“TNM believes in giving back to the community through our corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy. The health sector is one of the sectors that we are investing our money in because we realize that only health people can contribute to the socio- economic development of this country,” she said.
She expressed optimism that the facility once completed will go a long way in reducing maternal and neo-natal death in the area.
“This facility would go a long way in saving lives and reduce the burden which pregnant women undergo to access quality health care services hence reducing maternal death in the area and the district as a whole,” she said.
On his part, In-Charge of the health Centre, Mussa Soko commended TNM for the support towards construction of the maternity clinic.
“This assistance will go a long way in facilitating the completion of the structure which is expected to provide a conducive environment for delivery amongst expectant women in the area,” said Soko.
Soko added that the facility will not only benefit women but also the heath workers.
“We commend TNM for this great initiative which will not only benefit the women only but also health workers here will be motivated to work in a clean and spacious building,” he said.
The project is being spearheaded by a local charity, Chimteka Children Support.
Presently, there is an average of 77 deliveries per month in the maternity unit at the Chiosya Health Centre.
