Beer lovers will be paying more when they head to the bar from October 1, 2015 after Carlsberg Malawi Limited revealed price increases.

Carlsberg Malawi has increased prices of its alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages between 12 percent and 18 percent. The increase on soft drinks is between 12% to 25 %.
Imbibers will have to dig deeper into their pockets as Carlsberg Green in a 300 ml bottle is now at at K450 ($0.80) from K400 ($0.71) per 333ml bottle.
A two-litre bottle of Sobo Squash is now at K1, 500 from K1 200.
Non-alcoholic beverages such as Fanta, Coca-Cola and Sprite will be selling at K180 ($0.32) from K160 ($0.29) per 300ml returnable glass bottle.
According to the brewer, the increases are set according to the current economic climate in Malawi.
The local currency Kwacha is currently weakening against the dollar and inflation rising sharply.
Carlsberg Malawi noted that inflation and the exchange rate have “affected” the company’s costs “including those for raw materials.”
“Price stability is extremely important to Carlsberg in Malawi and we are very pleased to confirm that our weighted average price increase is below CPI [consumer price index] and is expected to be below projected 2016 inflation rates,” said Carlsberg Malawi in a statement.
With millions of Malawians facing a cost-of-living crisis, is it expected a lot of imbibers will quit the pub and buy discounted beer from supermarkets.
